Gatherer of the cultural and artistic life from Timis County, The Center for Culture
and Arts of the Timis County aims to respond to the needs of the folklore loving public by stimulating
the cultural and artistic life of the Timis County. Its activity is reflected by events, study researches,
conservation, preservation and valorization of the local traditions and customs and artistic training
(music, plastic arts, modern and traditional dances and handcrafts). The Center for Culture and Arts of the
Timis County also promotes young artists by offering artistic training and supporting further their
evolution.
We are a cultural center from the Western part of Romania, from a city called Timisoara. Our central concern
is to preserve, promote and valorize the cultural traditions and customs, folklore and traditional
handcrafts arts.
Our center has a folklore group called "Banatul". It promotes the Romanian traditional folklore music and
dances, especially from Banat region, a multiethnic cultural space. For any additional information please
take a look of our new website www.ccajt.ro.
A brief presentation of The Center for Culture and Arts of the Timis County
requires a geographical approach regarding the vast cultural area of its activity.
We represent Romania, more precisely the ethno-folkloric area known as Banat, a plane sub-zone of
the Timis County, an administrative-territorial unit located in the Western part of Romania, border
with Serbia and Hungary.
This geographical position had a determined role in the socio-cultural and economical evolution of
the area, Banat being regarded as one of the richest parts of Romania. This richness is well
represented in the cultural field also, if we look at the variety of specific traditions and
practices of the area, at the beauty of the traditional vesture, the variety of performances, the
developments of the inter-cultural relations.
All these aspects resulted in consolidation of a solid cultural institution in this part of the
country, capable in managing the cultural life and open new spheres of collaboration with other
cultural actors from Romania and from abroad. The Center for Culture and Arts of the Timis County
is located in Timisoara and works under the administrative authority of the Timis County Council,
with over 100 employees. The institutional structure is divided in three large departments: The
Preservation and Improvement of the Folkloric Tradition and Creation, the School of Arts and the
Banatul Traditional Song and Dance Ensemble.
The Preservation and Improvement of the Folkloric Tradition and Creation department focuses on
creating a database regarding the local traditional cultural field and opens perspectives for
cultural projects with international support in re-vitalization of the traditional crafts (pottery,
weaver…), part of the European cultural patrimony.
This objective can be also achieved through the Banatul Ensemble, which offers scenes of the
traditional practices from Banat, as well as other folkloric areas of Romania. The beauty and
richness of the local folklore was presented through the international tours of the Banatul
Ensemble in Italy, Spain, France, China, Serbia, Cuba, Hungary, Belgium...
The importance of the institution is shied by the implication of The Center for Culture and Arts of
the Timis County in the Cultural Agenda of the Timis County Council with more than 1000 annual
manifestations, but also by the involvement as co-organizer in actions with partners from the
DKMT areas, and in maintaining and increasing relations with the Romanian communities from abroad.
The cultural offer of The Center for Culture and Arts of the Timis County can be argued also by
the multitude of audio and video materials realized, but also by the direct participation in the
manifestations organized for the open public by the institution. The Center for Culture and Arts
of the Timis County is a modern institution with wide views that emphasize the European cultural
heritage.
